Addis Ababa | 24 July 2025 (MoPD)
During the Africa-wide stakeholder information session for the upcoming Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), Ethiopia’s State Minister for Planning and Development, H.E. Mr. Seyoum Mekonen, called for bold, unified African leadership in tackling the climate crisis.
Speaking to participants representing over 450 diverse stakeholders, including representatives from regional institutions, academia, research organizations, and partners from across the continent, he described ACS2, which is set for 8–10 September 2025 in Addis Ababa—as “Africa’s COP,” a platform to showcase homegrown climate solutions and demand fair climate finance.
“Africa is not waiting to be saved—it is leading with solutions,” he said. The Minister highlighted successful African initiatives such as Ethiopia’s Green Legacy, Kenya’s renewable energy leadership, and the Great Green Wall, while also stressing the urgent need to reform global climate finance systems.
He urged stakeholders to use ACS2 to:
● Showcase Africa-led climate solutions by bringing them into stage through hosting in side events, dialogues, pavilions and exhibitions
● Elevate Africa’s voice in global forums, including COP30 and the G20
● Advocate for and promote accessible and grant-based climate finance as well as encourage partnerships and invetsments
● Strengthen relevant institutions to undergo a reform and mobilize, manage, and effectively deploy climate finance to Africa
● Champion locally led innovations and technology solutions for climate change
The session also introduced opportunities and urged participants for engagement in side events, exhibitions, and thematic pavilions during ACS2.
